Manistique River in Michigan

Trip Overview

My wife & I paddled a 28 mile stretch of this slow meandering river running through Seney National wildlife refuge in the upper pennisula of Michigan. We started out from Germfask (Northland Outfitters) and paddled through Seney wildlife refuge then ended up spending the nite on a sand bar a couple miles past a small campground called Mead creek.

Didnt see much wildlife thru Seney. Some small trees fallen in the beginning of the journey but nothing we had to portage around. When we awoke on the sandbar I saw a yearling doe that was swimming across the river towards us and when he spotted us he was so intriqued he actually swam into a log laying in the middle of the river. He came up on the sandbar and was casually standing about 40 feet away!

We spent the rest of the day kayaking to Cookson bridge where we were picked up by the outfitter for a ride back to our vehicle in Germfask. This water is pretty slow, but its a nice easy paddle. We saw a few people from Germfask to Mead creek, but not a one between there & Cookson bridge. Nice & Peaceful!

Facilities @ Northland: they offer cabins or campsites w/toilets and a small store in the office, good accomodations

Directions:

Northland Outfitters is on hwy 77 in the Upper Penninsula of Michigan. They are right on the river and very friendly folks.
