Looking Glass River in Michigan

Trip Overview

We put in on the Looking Glass River at Lowell Road and took out at Bauer Road. About 9 river miles that took two hours.

The river was at the top of its banks and in many places over the banks and the current was pretty fast. It was a very pretty ride. This could be a significantly different experience later in the year when the river is lower.

In the first third of the trip we ran across one spot where a tree was down across the whole river. We were able to cross over the tree on the far left side where the tree was just enough under the water to pass over it. There were several spots along the way where the river was partially blocked.

We saw lots of birds including ducks and a heron. We heard something big moving away from the water - probably a deer. The first two thirds of the trip was through woods with only an occasional house.

Accommodations:

Midway through the trip we passed two parks on the left side of the river - both appeared to have restrooms and (had we chosen) would have been fairly easy to stop at

Outfitting:

We rented our kayaks for $25 from Wacousta Canoe Livery at 9988 Riverside Drive in Eagle. They were friendly and helpful

Fees:

We paid $25 to Wacousta Canoe Livery to rent the kayaks and be dropped off.

Directions:

I just did what my GPS told me to do.

About 10 minutes from Grand Ledge; about 45 minutes from Leslie.
