Lake smithfield (waterworks)

Trip Overview

Lake smithfield which back in the day to locals it was known as waterworks it has boating access to put in at which is a concrete ramp not my particular favorite places to put in at just one my quirks I just not very fond of concrete ramps..it has a picnic table to eat at.parking area can probally accommodate 6 to 10 vehicles .10 is pushing it but can be done..thankfully it not overly popular however was kinda busy while I was there .had guys fishing on it thankfully no gas powered engines allowed on lake so that's good.the lake is more long than wide but is still a nice paddle..u can probally paddle it in bout a hour give or take a few minutes nice afternoon excursion.didnt see lot wildlife even though I kept chasing a crane from one spot to another either I was following him or he was following me havent figured that part out yet.came across a long that was loaded with snapping turtles sunbathing..I have recently read in the local newspaper that due to extensive repairs that need to be done to the dam at the lake that the city council is considering and weighing there option .and due to the cost of repairs for the dam draining the lake is one the very real possibilities they are considering.so if you have not paddled yet and are considering it .you may want to know the clock may really be ticking and time running out before they decide to drain and do away with the lake.

Conditions

Plenty places to eat in smithfield va which is conveniently close by like 5 miles once you done with the paddle
