Kayaking Tofino: Timeless Wonders of Ancient Forests and Majestic Islands
Trip Overview
It’s not every day that you get to paddle through landscapes that seem pulled straight from a dream. Our recent day trip off Tofino, on Vancouver Island’s west coast, was nothing short of extraordinary—an adventure that left us both humbled and awestruck.
We began our journey at Grice Park, nestled on the northwest corner of Tofino. Launching our kayaks into the calm waters, we paddled eastward along the shore, passing by Arnet, Neilson, Riley, and Morpheus Islands. As we glided through the pristine waters, we were surrounded by towering mountains and lush forests that framed the horizon. The scenery was absolutely spectacular, and the abundance of wildlife added a magical touch to the experience.
Our destination was Meares Island, home to the legendary Big Tree Trail—a winding path through an ancient old-growth forest. Walking among trees that have stood for over 2,000 years was truly humbling. The sheer size and timeless presence of these giants made us feel connected to something far greater than ourselves.
After exploring the trail, we continued our paddling journey westbound, retracing our route past Morpheus and Neilson Islands. We couldn’t resist pausing at Stone Island for a leisurely picnic lunch under the sun. It was a moment of pure serenity, soaking in the beauty of the surroundings and reflecting on the incredible day.
Our return leg took us past Beck and Arnet Islands, leading us back to Tofino. As we paddled, the grandeur of the mountains and the ancient old-growth forests continued to take our breath away. This trip was an unforgettable blend of adventure, nature, and peacefulness—a perfect reminder of the awe-inspiring wonders of the Pacific Northwest.
For those seeking their next great outdoor experience, we wholeheartedly recommend exploring the waters off Tofino. And stay tuned for more stories from our kayaking adventures—there’s so much more to discover in this enchanting corner of the world.
