Kankakee River Wildlife Viewing

Trip Overview

We took our 17' Grumman Canoe and 2 kayaks from SR39 & SR 8 Public Access Site to the Yellow River Public Access Site. The river moves slow, there were no obstructions in the water, and the river runs straight. We saw a huge Bald Eagle Nest, a Bald Eagle up close a mile or two downstream of the nest, and lots of other birds. Our 5 mile journey took just over 4 hours with very little paddling. Our adventure was more of a nature float: watching birds and listening to the peaceful sounds of the river, the woods, and the nearby wetlands.

Portage Notes

Banks have sand bags, riprap, steep terrain, and tall weeds. Portaging would be difficult.
