The upper James River near Charlottesville,VA has the clearest water around. You are able to see bass, and other small freshwater fish beneath you. Off to the sides you might spot a deer or two grabbing a bite to eat. The only sounds are that of nature. Water rushing over large boulders, birds calling their mates and possibly the hum of a dragonfly that has landed close to your ear.
There are many places to stop along the river. Large boulders pertruding from the center or small beach like areas on the side. These are great places to take pictures and even go for a nice swim.
Make sure to pack a small cooler for you lunch. If you have a small to medium sized drybag bring it along with some towels and other goodies.
We found no bug spray was needed. There are loads of Dragonflys hitching a ride, but they are harmless and interesting to watch.
There is a campsite, no running water or electricity, primative. The outfitters shop has hot showers and changing rooms. A small gift area with T-shirts, hats and such.
You'll enjoy your trip down the river passing other canoes, kayaks and groups of tubers.
The 4 & 7 mile journey are great for beginners.
This seems to be a place we will always return to.
Primative camping in selected areas only.

Not much need for a map on this area of the river. I have heard that the James River Rafting guide is good. I haven't read it myself yet.
