Island Lake in Michigan

Trip Overview

This was a challenging water obstacle trip. Lots of downed trees all over the river. However, you could navigate around all of them except one where we had a very short portage. We were definitely lucky that there had been significant rain a week before we went. If you did this trip when the water level was lower there would have been more portages.

We saw lots of different types of birds including heron, an owl, an osprey, and several kingfishers.

Fees:

Metro park fee for where you end and state park fee where you start.

Directions:

Start at Island Lake picnic grounds (where the canoe livery launches). There is a new canoe slide just installed that makes it easy to go to river.

Finish at Huron Meadows metro park.
