Took to a new part of the Iowa River the other day and had a great, short trip. We put in just south of the dam at Steamboat Rock. There's river access to the immediate south of the dam (north of D35) but there's a much easier access point, less rocks, to the south of D35 on the east side of the river.
There's small rapids here and there, but a pretty easy ride. Paddling rather steadily, the trip from Steamboat Rock to Eldora (Pine Lake) took right around an hour.
Access point to the river only
No fees or permits. Small parking lot.
Access point is off of D35 on the west side of Steamboat Rock.
No maps or books.
