Trip Overview

This is what the ad said in the local paper:

"Herring Creek offers a choice of amazing scenic journeys taking you through a rich and diverse landscape, overflowing with wildlife and History".

Wow and they were correct.

We drove to Berkley Plantation and Bruce's Bike & Boat Rental is just off the driveway to Berkley. This is Mr. Chavis's home and business and really the only way to get on the creek except for coming via the James River. We launched off his pier, $5.00 for parking, we were on our journey.

The creek literally starts at the ramp and goes 4-1/2 miles to the James River. Very quiet as the creek runs through the land of Berkeley, Evelynton and Westover Plantation. Only a few homes off the creek. After paddling and maneuvering through the creek it widens out and within a few miles you are at the James River.

Just beautiful as we never saw another person. Lots of Eagles and Osprey fishing. Be mindful of the tides, we had to walk with our kayaks to get to the ramp.

Great trip. Very scenic and private on the creek. Some turns in the creek are challenging so a little experience would be suggested.
