Harmon Lake in North Dakota

Trip Overview

I just got back (mid August) from kayaking at Harmon Lake north of Mandan, ND. This is a beautiful small lake (about 145 acres) that was just made in 2009. Besides kayaking and canoeing there are hiking and mountain biking trails (about 10 miles), 2 sandy beaches, a fishing pier (mostly trout I've been told), and primitive camping. Motorized boats are allowed but only at "no wake" speed.

It took me about an hour to kayak around the entire lake that included into two nice little inlets where I stopped long enough to pick some berries and listen to the quiet. Although there was a slight breeze the water was fairly calm due to the hills that completely surround the lake.

The camping is primitive but there are a few vault toilets and some picnic shelters. At the main swimming beach there is also a playground.

The only person I talked to said there were trout in the lake but I'm not sure what size. He pulled one in as I was walking over to him and threw it back because of its small size. The roads going into and throughout the lake area are paved so it should be no problem getting into the area at any time.

The area is very well maintained and Morton County has plans for additional improvements to it. Whether you're just passing through, want a quiet day of paddling, or plan to spend a few days I would recommend this recreation area.

Accommodations:

Besides kayaking and canoeing there are hiking and mountain biking trails (about 10 miles), 2 sandy beaches, a fishing pier (mostly trout I've been told), and primitive camping. Motorized boats are allowed but only at "no wake" speed.

Numerous motels are available in Mandan and across the river in Bismarck.

Fees:

I think the camping fee is $5.00/night.

Directions:

From I-94 take the Refinery Rd exit (ND 1806). Drive north on ND 1806 approximately 7 miles. You will see the sign to get to the lake. It's just a little ways to the west of the highway.
