Hansey Creek Trail / Egg Island WMA in New Jersey

Trip Overview

The Hansey Creek Trail is a well marked kayaking loop in the Egg Island Wildlife Management Area. The trip was approximately 7.5 miles long. There are a few other trails that are in the same area which intersect the Hansey Creek Trail, but all are clearly marked.

There is a free boat ramp off Hansey Creek Rd that you can easily access the trail from. The loop is in tidal marshes, and can be challenging when going against the tide.

There are two osprey nests which can be viewed easily from the trail, and were active with at least 5 individuals in the area. There are a variety of other shore birds to be seen, as well as turtles, fiddler crabs and other wildlife. We also saw a pair of ibises flying overhead, which was a rare treat. The only downside was the swarms of greenheads, which were kept mostly at bay with a generous dose of bug spray.

Directions:

From Port Norris take County Rd 553 North to Hansey Creek Rd (on left) boat ramp is at the end of the road. Parts are unpaved.
