Hamburg Cove in Connecticut

Trip Overview

We launched at Cove Boatyard on Hamburg Rd in Lyme, the fee was $5 per kayak, and seemed reasonable as there was no other launches nearby. This boatyard is in the upper part of the cove. What struck us first was the odor of rotting fish. Seems the Menhaden (Bunker) were migrating into the cove and die, resulting in hundreds of floating dead fish. Once we paddled to the main part of the cove (toward to the CT river), the effect of the smell diminished as there was more air moving. Over all the paddle was very nice, plenty of Osprey, Herons, Egrets. The home along this area are absolutely stunning and this alone would worth the trip. The boat traffic was light as it was a Friday. We paddled to the CT River and stopped along the bank and ate our lunch. The Menhaden problem is a common one in the fall according the boatyard employee we spoke with.
