Five Mile Creek in Connecticut

Trip Overview

The Five Mile River is a slow moving, meandering creek that flows through low swampy terrain. There were at least a half dozen beaver dams that had to be negotiated. We found that about half of them required us to get out of the canoe and carry over. The rest were low enough to allow the canoe to slide over without getting out. The water was at a medium level.

We recommend launching at Route 44 and taking out at the dam in Pineville. The sections upstream are difficult. We had to line the canoe through a couple of rapids and parking is an issue. The run from route 44 to Pineville takes about two hours.

While we did not fish, it looked promising.

Directions:

Take I-395 to exit 97. Follow route 44 east for about three miles to the Five Mile River Park on the right. Launch here.

To reach the takeout, follow route 44 east and turn right on E. Putnam Road. This turns into Cutler Road. Then turn Right at Stone Road and Left at River Road. The dam at Pineville will be on your right about a mile after entering River Road. Takeout to the left of the spillway onto what appears top be public land. To the right is clearly private land.
