Elkhorn Creek in Kentucky

Trip Overview

Several friends and myself gave the Elkhorn Creek a try. We used an outfitter for a few kayak rentals and shuttle services ("Canoe KY"). We took their I-L trip which is advertised at 12 miles, but in reality is only about 8.5 after mapping it out with a GPS. They are aware of this, but for some reason continue to mislead customers into thinking they're going 12 miles.

There is also a whitewater section above this section and I'd love to try that later, although I heard on the news that several people had to be rescued from that section via helicopter on the same day we'd been there.

Water was running about 900 CFS which is a great flow for this section. Paddling was easy and interesting. We only had to paddle to steer. At this level there were several riffles and light class II water to keep things interesting. It took only about 3 hours of paddling to complete the whole trip. I'll definitely go back here.

Accommodations:

Neat outfitter. Parking is a little crazy.
