Drummond Island in Michigan

Trip Overview

We arrived the evening of June 24 to wind and rain. We stayed at the Drummond Island Township Campground. Great place not many people. The only exception being that the bathrooms were not well tended, (TP and such was slim to none). The camp site was fantastic with a great fire pit. Since we were getting hit with a wind right out of the Northwest it took about an hour to get a fire going that would burn. By then it was late so we headed to town for ice and stopped at Chucks bar and grill. Fun environment there but the food was nothing to write home about. Then back to camp and to bed.

Woke up the next morning to a beautiful site with the wind down some and the water looking aqua and inviting. We rallied around and slid our kayaks in and off we went. This was our first trip with Kayaks to Drummond so we are still learning where to paddle. We stayed close to the campground and paddled to all the little islands picked rocks and took pictures.

That evening we went into town for dinner and music at the Northwood. My friends had prime rib and potato soup to die for. Unfortunately, Sunday morning we had to leave but when we woke up the wind was calm and the lake was too the sun was shining you could see down into the water like it was clear glass.

Drummond Island is a beautiful and enchanting place you don't want to miss.

Accommodations:

Drummond Island Township Park.

Rustic camping with the option of Electricity. Outhouses, and garbage removal. Fire pits and picnic tables at each site with a community pavilion and fresh water for drinking available. Great place.

Fees:

Fee for non-electric campsite: 12 dollars a day for a family but they will hit you an extra campsite fee if you have more than two adults. If you want electric you pay 15.00 a day. Drop box for fee payment.

Also you will have to pay the Ferry fee to cross to the Island but it is reasonable and the fee is round trip pricing. The ferry ride is only 20 minutes or so.

Directions:

Cross the Mighty Mac and follow the signs going East to Drummond.

Resources:

Drummond Island has a tourist map that marks the shipwrecks and the difficulty of the kayaking area along with other attractions. But is priced anywhere from 3.00 - 9.95 and can only be purchased on the Island.
