We parked in the day use area (free parking) at the campground (but there is camping available, also). We launched our SUPs from a small gravel beach next to the boat ramp. We paddled south of the bridge, but that area of the lake is shallow and small (and the water is freezing). We then paddled under the bridge to the north part of the lake, which is much bigger and more enjoyable. As we paddled our way north, the water got warmer so that when we got past Thunder Point campground, the water was warm enough for a short swim.
After paddling Diablo Lake, I recommend driving up to the Diablo Lake viewpoint (just down Highway 20 from Colonial Creek campground) to get an overhead view of the paddle you just did.
