Trip Overview

Decided to do a weekend trip from Callicoon to Port Jervis, NY in late season after the crowds are gone. We all thought it would be a slog due to the lack of rain over the previous week. We were dead wrong.

It seems that the reservoirs and all the local ponds were being drawn down in anticipation for Hurricane Sandy. It turned into one of the best runs we have ever done.

All rapids were at least one class higher than rated and some being 2classes higher. One in particular, below the cliffs of route 97, a class 1 with usually just a standing wave became 2 6' waves with 200 yards of 3'+ rapids beyond. I made the first wave but stalled and dumped on the second. It made for a cold swim.

I camped at Sylvania tree farm

Outfitting:

14' touring kayaks with skirts, wetsuits
