Trip Overview

Deep River - from Carbonton Dam to Deep River Park

Had a great paddle on the Deep River. There was a lot of flat water with some current and one class I (barely) rapid near Plank Road. Looked like the remains of an old dam.

Water level was about 2.4 ft at Moncure and if it was a bit higher the rapid would wash out. For flatwater paddlers 2.4 ft is probably as low as you want to go. There is a nice put-in park at the old Carbonton Dam on hwy 42 and Deep river park waits 12.6 miles later. Both provide easy access to the water.

The current flows at around 1-2 miles per hour and is very manageable. Not to many places to stop as the banks are steep and muddy. Great wild life scenery though.

Accommodations:

Both Parks have ample parking and the park at Carbonton has a Porta Toilet.

Fees:

none
