Deception Pass & the Salish Sea

Trip Overview

You will take day trips to Deception Pass, Canoe Pass, Rosario Strait and explore of its many islands. In addition to the spectacular paddling conditions and abundant sea life you might also see orcas, seals and sea lions. If you’re lucky we may even see minke and humpback whales.

There will be options to paddle classic tide races, go rock gardening and take a few longer exploratory journeys using the massive tidal flows in the Strait. The trip is planned to take advantage of the larger spring tides. You will be based out of a house in Anacortes, WA giving easy access to wide a range of paddling with very little driving.

Deception Pass and The Salish Sea trip includes 7 days of coaching, lodging in a house, breakfasts and lunches plus 4 dinners. You’ll eat out at local restaurants a few times; those meals are not included. For those flying, there is a shuttle that runs from the airport to Anacortes, you can be picked up from the Anacortes stop.

Gear Notes

Participants should have all the standard gear for sea kayaking on the open water including a tow rope and helmet.

Conditions

There is lots of water moving through the area; tidal velocities can approach 7 knots. Sea state is variable but can range from flat to 4 foot seas.
