Cumberland MD Dam to Fairgrounds

A self-supported trip created by TXpaddler0825

Trip Overview

Parking under the I68 bridge is permit only 8-4pm weekdays. The dam/waterfall is very close but there is, surprisingly very little to no current that will force you downstream. I paddled upstream for an hour very easily in a 12"Perception Sport Kayak. 1/27/17 I did the downstream trip from the fairgrounds to this location and the current was not very strong at any point and pretty boring. The only highpoint is that there was a small car in the river just downstream of the fairgrounds launch... I found out later that a car had gone into the river at launch and had apparently floated downstream until it wedged into shallow rocks.

Safety Notes

no safety issues at all; almost too ez of a trip

Gear Notes

3/4mm Wetsuit, 7mm gloves and boots, 12' perception sport kayak

Conditions

it was about 35 degrees on both trips but a 3/4 mm wetsuit, gloves and boots does great.
