Cohocton River in New York

Trip Overview

Being three miles from home the Cohocton River was a surprisingly good trip. I've taken a few trips down the river in the past few weeks, but on this occasion we launched at the ice cream shop on 415 right in the Village of Cohocton. There is a state fishing access site about a mile farther upstream, but a large fallen cottonwood and a long shallow riffle will impede your route.

We planned a short trip down route 415 to the fishing access site on Wentworth road(just off st rt 415). There are not many rapids in this section of river but there are many trees and other obstacles that make the trip exciting. Each member of our 3 person group did manage to take a swim at some point in the trip, one member breaking a paddle on a stream side rock.

All in all it was a great trip, until removing my water shoe and discovering a leech on the top of my foot. I would still recommend this trip to any one looking for a quick little trip without requiring too much skill. I'm looking forward to exploring the rest of the river in the future.
