Clinton River in Michigan

Trip Overview

The Clinton River is familiar to those of us who live and work in Norther Suburbs. This year I tried it out in my canoe with my son and friend Dave in his kayak. Without bragging, I have done a lot of canoeing, but this may be the fastest river I have been on.

We put in at the skate park. The scenery is spectacular and the experience of floating through back yards was unforgettable. But the river is poorly groomed. This is where the sharing of information is helpful. Getting pinned by downed trees was very dangerous. There were several down trees at that time.

Knowing in advance the condition of the river would be very helpful. Also, the bridge at Hamlin and Crooks may be the high water mark. Some paddlers died there once, so it is advisable to check the height of the water before setting out.

Perhaps the spring is a bad time to paddle this river, but I would be hesitant to do it again without knowing the river is clear. Please enjoy this river respectfully and share with us your experience.
