Catoctin Creek in Maryland

Trip Overview

This is a peaceful creek with some traffic. The trip is mostly calm woodland and farmland. Some light-moderate rapids are there but a beginner crew could go a day without tipping. Fishing is fairly good here. There are bass(small mouth and large), catfish, many lempomises (means fish in the bluegill family). The occasional carp or croaker may pop up.

Directions:

Follow 270 from DC, or 70 from Baltimore west to Frederick. Get on 70 if you werent before. Get on alternate 40 and get of at Middletown turn into old Middletown Rd.

There will be a right onto Sumantown road. Then a left onto Carrol Boyer rd. at the end of Carrol Boyer travel right onto Poffingberger Rd. youll see the river. Go till you see steel bridge. This is the drop off point.

Launches:

Put in at Poffingberger Rd when you reach a steel bridge.
