Cape Fear in North Carolina

Trip Overview

My brother, father, and I drove down to a Wildlife access near Lillington, NC. We put in at the ramp with a hot sun shining down. The water was nearly stagnant and the quality was a little disappointing initially. After about 3 miles of paddling the trip started living up to out expectations....water quality seemed to improve and numerous little rapids popped up. The spray of beginner whitewater was just enough to keep the sun at bay. Water wasn't extremely high, but our kayaks had no problems with the depth.

Overall I'd call it a great paddle. Seeing a Baldheaded Eagle up close near the take-out really capped it.

Directions:

Look up the Cape Fear near Erwin...you can't miss it.

Resources:

We used the DeLorme Atlas for NC and Bob Benner's 'A Paddler's Guide to Eastern NC' to pick out this trip. Both were dead on in there description of the conditions.
