Blackwater Creek in Florida

A self-supported trip created by paddleholic

Trip Overview

This Blackwater creek flows out of lake Norris,in Lake county . On Sunday morning 8 Aquaholics started down stream. We were in 4 canoes and 1 kayak. Carring 2 chainsaws and 4 bow saws We set out to clear a path for paddlers the first down fall was 100 yds downstream it took a half hour to cut through. The next a few hundred yards ahead ahead took the same time. Two more in the next half mile took another 40 minutes. Then the blowdowns came closer together. We ducked under several logs and had to pull over logs We could not cut. Many were just above water level and 3-4 feet thick. Logs were cut standing in the water and from the boats ,many small face slapper branchs were clipped off. During the afternoon we were hit with an hour of hard rain with showers on and off for 3 more hours. This run took 11 hours for 4 1/2 miles. The creek is more open then when we started but still a tough passage. For adventurous paddlers it is a lot of fun but not unless your ready to work hard and maybe get wet. With out clearing the run should take 6 or 7 hours.
