Betsie River in Michigan

Trip Overview

The Betsie River was entered at a public access point just east of the bridge that carries US 31 and ended at the River Road public access point. The trip took 2 3/4 hours and was very enjoyable. The Betsie is not a difficult river but there are occasional strainers that require precise handling. This river is similar to the nearby upper Platte River, but the scenery is more wild with fewer houses along the way. There was a large tree that completely blocked the river, requiring a 20' portage on the left shore. Unfortunately, my companion got 30 mosquito bites during the brief time on shore, so take along the Deep Woods Off.

We used our own kayaks, but this trip can also be set up through local companies such as Crystal Lake Adventure Sports in Beulah and Vacation Campground at the US 31 bridge.

Directions:

The stretch of US 31 that is shared with M 115 just south of Benzonia will get you there.
