Betsie Bay & Beyond
Trip Overview
A pod of 4 sea kayakers enjoyed a pleasant autumn paddle, beginning at the launch on the south end of Betsie Bay, following the Elberta shoreline out to Lake Michigan, and returning via the Frankfort shoreline. We saw trumpeter swans and various ducks and geese; two early life saving stations, a USCG station, defunct ships repurposed as breakwaters, and an old fashioned parade, complete with marching band!
New to kayaking in Northwest Michigan, I also observed little current in the bay, the potential for challenging clapotis in the channel out to the big lake, whose steep sand beaches could be expected to feature dumping, rather than spilling waves on a rough water day. Therefore, I checked the intermediate and advanced skillset boxes as well as noting the bay’s beginner-friendly conditions on a low-wind day.
Safety Notes
All were in sea kayaks and had practiced recovery techniques.
Few motor boats were still in the water, but at least one boater under way was not expecting kayakers that late in the season!
Gear Notes
Drysuits and insulating layers for cold water. PFDs worn by all; marine radios, tow ropes at hand.
Conditions
Mild; flat water in bay; gentle waves (almost swell-like) on Lake Michigan. Overcast most of the time.
