Bear Creek in Mississippi

Trip Overview

My wife and I kayaked down a 10-mile long, seldom paddled section of Bear Creek. Put-in was at Tishomongo State Park (located in northeast Mississippi); take-out was at the Bear Creek Picnic Area on the Natchez Trace Parkway (located in Alabama).

The Bear Creek dam, located many miles upstream in Alabama, was releasing 110 cfs which assured a steady flow down the creek. Difficulty was Class I with downed trees being the only real hazard. Flow was generally good with only two long pools to paddle through.

Bird life in the surrounding countryside was exceptional, a really lovely outdoor experience.

The trip took around 3 1/2 hours.

Not recommended for the real novice because of the downed timber, but highly recommended for the experienced paddler.

Accommodations:

Put-in is an improved canoe launch at Tishomingo State Park.

Take-out is on a gravel bar at the Bear Creek Picnic area.

Fees:

The state park charges an access fee to launch boats.
