Allegheny River in Pennsylvania

A self-supported trip created by guest-paddler

Trip Overview

My wife and I kayaked 17 miles on the Alleghany River in PA. It is a beautiful area to kayak. We camped at Buckaloons, which is just south of Warren, PA. This is an Allegheny National Forest Camp Ground. Information can be found at

We tent camped there, although they do have electric hookups and spaces for campers. There are new hot showers and flush toilets. We made reservations with Indian Waters (Josh and Piper Lindell). They rent canoes and kayaks. They will also provide just the transportation for your kayak. That is the service we used. They are very friendly, and will help you via phone or email with accommodations, recommendations, or any other questions. I must have e-mailed Piper half a dozen times with questions! Their web site is Josh drove us up to Warren Hospital, where there is a helicopter landing pad that doubles as a boat launch!

We started in the city there and went downstream 17 miles. It is not long after leaving Warren that you are nestled in between the tall trees of the National Forest. It is a peaceful, beautiful kayak trip that everyone should experience.

The water was about three feet deep and moves between 3 and 5.7 MPH. It was moving very slow at times, and other areas it would be moving more swiftly. There are several islands on the way that you can stop on. Some of them are the National Forest where you are permitted to camp on free of charge. Just leave with what you came with on the islands.

If you only want to do 10 miles, they can take you to Buckaloons camping area, where there is a launch site. So, from Buckaloons to Indian Waters is about a 15 minute drive. There are also 30 mile trips and more. There were Boy Scouts heading out on a 100 mile canoe trip from Buckaloons.

Piper and Josh are very flexible about where you would like them to transport you and your kayak. The fees depend on rental, and distance, but are very reasonable. We would like to go back again this summer. Hope you have the opportunity to go.
