Trip Overview

Launched at the private landing on D avenue (Rineharts Landing, 1025 E D Ave) and had a second vehicle at Fannie Pell Park in Plainwell.

There is a sign for a spot to portage around a dam. You’ll have to do that to go into Plainwell by the park next to Deans Ice Cream or to the gazebo side of Fannie Pell. Once you pass that portage there is one more dam on the right, a fun but steep 3’ drop, but the river was totally blocked to kayaks by a series of downed trees. We ended up backtracking and portaging around the little dam to continue northwest on the east branch of the river. This branch goes through a series of culverts and ends at the dam at Fannie Pell Park. The current was strong but it was not too hard to exit to the floating dock!

A lovely paddle with a little excitement👍 Would be nice if the downed trees could be removed!

Safety Notes

Spiders and strong currents in the culverts.

Gear Notes

Have a dry bag and quick dry clothes.

Conditions

Plainwell might clear the trees and add better signage at major launch locations!
