200th Anniversary Erie Canal Through-Paddle

A self-supported trip created by CarsenPaddles

Trip Overview

Currently in the planning and training stages of setting up a ~2 week~ trip across the Erie Canal from the Buffalo to Albany (West to East) completing all 363- miles in one trip. From what information I have gathered I see 2 trip reports from paddlers in the past 25 years. I'd like to add to this legacy by documenting my journey for the 200th year of its completion. More to come as I continue to make this more of a reality. I will get the message out to as many as possible of my plan to through paddle the canal. Not that I care for publicity, but I would find it neat if other people found what I am attempting interesting.

Safety Notes

I carry with me various water rescue gear as well as a GPS located device. Though the dangers of the canal tend to be localized along the locks, I will have family members set along the trip resupply me.

Gear Notes

Prijon Seayak 2 will be my trusted vessel. I have 6 seasons in it and it's continued to impress me what I can through at it. The canal should pose no challenge to her.

Most of the gear I used to section hike the AT will be applicable here.

Will coordinate 3 planned resupply points, with 1 being a reserve if necessary.

7 days of dehydrated food, 2 (1L) water bottles, water filter, water tablets, VHF marine radio, rain gear, 1-person tent, undershell clothing, sleeping bag, 2 dry store bags, stove, utensils+ toiletries, kayak wheels, hat, 3 hiking shorts/ pants, 4 sunproof long sleeved shirts, various bananas, a waterproof camera, and phone.

Conditions

TBH. Fill in as we proceed.

Portage Notes

will camp at locks as allowed by lock masters.
