Thrum Mill to Weldon

Coquet

Description

Bouncy grade 2 river with possible grade 3 section at the thrum mill when in spate, with weir and fall including holes followed by short rock section. From there to Weldon you will find sections of grade 2 rapids, with a couple possible grade 3 depending on water levels around brinkburn priory and a strainer by a fall as you approach Weldon. A nice little play spot and some steady water. The best time to paddle this stretch is when water levels are at least half a meter higher than summer flow. Can park in a lay-by opposite cragside, just before you reach Rothbury, if you pass the football club you’ve gone too far. From the lay-by you should walk up the path to the thrum mill and begin above the weir. Alternatively you can start at the stepping stones in Rothbury for an easier launch.
