South River at North Fork Shenandoah River

Description

Location: off Jacksons Way Port Republic, VA 24471. Nearest cross street Tiger Camp Road. Plenty of parking and it is free.

Trip South River at North Fork Shenandoah River (Port Republic) to Island Ford May 2021.

Put in Port Republic let out Island Ford. Second car parked at Island Ford directions, from 33 turn on to Island Ford Road around the Thunderbird Café. Drive until the first bridge and take a right at the far side of the bridge. Plenty of parking here also and it is free.

Estimated time on sign from Port Republic to Island Ford is 3-5 hours. We did it in 2 hours and 41 minutes with individual Kayaks.

The river level was listed at low normal. Had to scoot off some rocks once or twice. Nice long paddle with some minor rapid areas I would not even call them rapids fine for beginners.
