North Canadian River

Oklahoma City, US

Description

Starting at the highway 66 bridges and paddling upstream the river is wide, with almost no current, the banks are a mixture of willow, hardwoods and marsh lands. The trip follows the highway for a quarter mile before bending away to the north. Paddling away from the highway the noise and the bustle fall away as access to the river is limited to a few trails. As you paddle up through winding sandy banks the river narrows the banks steepen and the current steadily pushes against your efforts. When your time is up or your shoulders tell you, you turn and begin the glide back, it almost seems like a different river as you go back with the current.
