- North 1st Street Launch
Description
This launch is about 1/4 mile North of Benjamin St on N. 1st St. There is plenty of space for parking on the mowed grass area. The launch is steep, so be careful. The water is relatively fast moving here, coming from the flood control to the East. It is best to enter the water while in your kayak, sliding the boat into the water. The trail take you past the Country Club, then under Benjamin Ave. The River then goes past some residential and businesses and passes under a historic railroad bridge before reaching the takeout point by the dam at first street, near Johnson Park and downtown Norfolk. The float from here to the Sugar City Dam takeout is about 1-1.5 hrs. depending on flow and paddling effort. It is possible to go portage over 1st St. and continue on. Kayak or tube rental as well as shuttle service is available in Norfolk.
