Description
Lake Needwood offers quiet, flatwater boating in the larger Needwood Park in Montgomery County, Maryland. On weekends, the park can be extremely crowded with large family picnics and crowded walking trails. However, the lake itself is rarely crowded.
The park is a county property that includes many amenities, including a boat launch, seasonal boat rentals (spring, summer, early fall), an open-air archery range (not staffed), excellent playground for kids, fee-based ropes course, and walking and biking trails that extend around and connect all the way into DC through Rock Creek Park. Many times of year you can also use the public restrooms, but they aren't always open.
Enjoy the beautiful 75-acre Lake Needwood in rental kayaks, rowboats, canoes or pedal boats. Private boats can also be launched with permits. You’ll need a daily or seasonal boating pass to go on the lake; seasonal passes are good for entry to both lakes in Rock Creek Park. Dogs are allowed on the rental boats, but must be leashed at all other times in the park.
Fishing is permitted in Lake Needwood and Lake Frank (just 10 minutes away).
The new accessible/ADA compliant dock and launch system makes it possible for people with limited mobility to launch both canoes and kayaks.
Parking is available and like most public parks, the gates are closed at dusk. Water fountains are available and a few trash cans. However this is still a Leave No Trace park so please take out any plastic bags, water bottles, etc that don't fit in the cans. The cans are mainly for the rental pavilions with grills.
