Jaws of Death - North Fork Flood Control

North Fork

Description

DO NOT ATTEMP TO GO DOWN THIS PART OF THE NORTH FORK! The flood control protects The city of Norfolk from what would otherwise be periodic devastating flood waters in the Spring of the year. The Corps of Engineers must have decided that putting one large overflow with a huge precipice and large concrete teeth at the bottom was a much better idea than putting smaller drops that could be survived by anyone who was unaware of the danger. Getting out of the flood control early is not easy either. The banks are almost vertical depending on water levels, so be aware of the conditions and exit strategy before trying to do this section. Also be aware that if you do plan to exit where the flood control empties some of its waters back to the main channel of the North Fork, that crossing private property must be avoided.
