- Fairfleld Boathouse / Ivanhoe Northcote Canoe Club
Description
Fairly steep path/road to carry your yak to the water from the carpark. Concrete stepped launch point, also used by the Ivanhoe Northcote Canoe Club. This area can get really busy in summer with people visiting the Fairfield boathouse, or having BBQs. Kayaks, canoes and rowing skiffs can be hired from the boathouse, should you want to bring some friends who don't have access to a yak. Due to Dights falls (an artificial weir) appox 6.5km down river, the river levels genrally do not drop below a certain level. The water here is very flat and slow moving (except times of flood). You can head down the Yarra, under the Eastern Freeway, past Bellbird Park launch point (toilets available here) where you will a large colony of Grey-headed flying-foxes, past Studley Park Boathouse (also food, drink, bbqs, toilets available here), till you get to Dights falls. Heading up river from Fairfield boathouse will take you under the Chandler hwy, and can easily keep going for several Kms before it starts to get shallow, to where Darebin Creek meets the Yarra. Trees and bushland in either direction, appart from the odd encounter with the Eastern Freeway, you wouldn't really know you are so close to the city.
