There is a small park on the west bank of the river mouth and a boat launch on the East bank of the river mouth. More info can be found here about the site, which explains the east river bank. I launched off the beach on the west river bank. The water in the river has excellent visibility and gets deeper as you go down the river. I could see all the way to the bottom of the river and admire the large rocks.
There is a waterfall father south of the river but there is a long stretch of river where it is safe to paddle and there was not a noticeable current. I did not paddle anywhere near the falls and still enjoyed a good amount of the river. I have visited the falls themselves on a separate occasion and they are much more like a cascade (less than 10 ft. high). There are also some shallow patches near the river mouth but when the water visibility is good it’s not hard to avoid them.
The river mouth also offers the opportunity to paddle lake superior, which can be beautiful at sunset.
If the river and lake look placid, it’s a wonderful, easy paddle with great visibility. I was also able to see the bottom of lake Superior from this location once leaving the river mouth.
