Algodones Dam

Rio Grande River - Algodones, US

Description

Free but unsupervised parking is at the end of a dirt road. Riverbank access is blocked by guard rails, so a several hundred meter haul, including a steep but doable primitive launch access right below a low dam. Once in the water, take out points are about two, three or five to six hours down steam depending on if you get out at Bernallio, Siphon Beach in Corrales, or the Alameda bridge in Albuquerque. The trip is a peaceful drift with only two short class one rapids. Otherwise expect a lazy drift where you'll likely see many more ducks and water birds, carp, soft shell turtles, and undeveloped scenery, than people.
