Abiquiu Wave

Rio Chama

Description

The Abiquiu wave is a Class II+ man-made surf wave just below the Abiquiu lake dam. It is surfable at flies above 500cfs. It's a steep wave-hole, so shorter kayaks and surf boards work best. Above 1000cfs it does green out for easier surfing with longer half-slice kayaks and medium length surfboards. The water is coming from the bottom of the lake, so it is very cold year-round. Definitely plan on wearing a wetsuit or dry suit, even in the summer. Always wear a PFD and helmet, cuz Rocks Hurt! There's no camping at the day use area next to the wave, but there is camping just a little bit down the road. You can also continue to paddle downstream for two miles to the end of the road (CAUTION there is a fence and a rock weir), or you can paddle about 8 miles to the hwy 84 bridge near Bode's in Abiquiu.
