Kayak Paddle Float Self Rescue

A Word on Paddle Floats

There are different types of paddle floats. This one I've got today is just a big bag with two inflatable chambers, one on each side. Let's see how it works.

Using a Paddle Float

We're in the water, and we inflate the bladders. Once we've inflated both sides, we push it on over to the paddle (this part is the same for all inflatable paddle float self-rescues).

Re-entry Technique

Move paddle float on to the paddle. Pull the cord tight.
Then hook the paddle on the back of the boat (through deck lines), hook your thumb over the top of the paddle shaft, and fingers through the deck lines.

Then go duck far into the water, and as you come up kick with the legs and land your chest on the back deck.
From there hook a leg in, get the other leg in, and then just keep that rotation going until you get back around into the boat and sitting upright.

Then, take the paddle float off, stuff it in the boat, put your sprayskirt back on and be on your way.

Tip for Choppy Water

In choppy water, hook a leg into the cockpit to keep your kayak close while you're busy inflating the paddle float.
