Don’t Be That Guy

We’re all eager to enjoy canoeing, kayaking, and paddleboarding this summer, but many people overlook a few simple things that can keep them and their families safe on the water. Paddling is a very safe activity if you have basic skills, good equipment and the right mindset. First is wearing a properly fitted life jacket, all the time, every time. Checking the weather and tides before heading out is necessary due to their unpredictability. Wearing appropriate clothing is important too, whether that means a hat and sun shirt in balmy weather, or warm waterproof layers for rain. Knowing how to get back on your watercraft if you fall off is an essential skill (pro tip: practice with friends on a hot day). And finally, avoid alcohol while paddling. Stay hydrated with sports drinks or good old fashioned water instead.
