My brother and I got this…
We bought the Kon Tiki…
I was very unhappy with the rudder which is poorly designed. It was unable to withstand regular use. The arms that support the rudder eventually folded! Another deficiency we struggled with was poor drainage off the deck of the boat. The molded lip which encircles both cockpits does not allow water to flow freely over the boat. Anytime we were out in a chop, paddlers in the Kon Tiki had a pool of water around their waist. Buyers should also be aware that the plastic is very soft and more susceptible than our other boats to warp & oilcan in the sun if left on the roof racks. We transport this boat in saddles and it seems to melt into them. I have just pulled the Kon Tiki out of storage and intend to take the rudder back to the dealer to see if Sun is willing to stand behind their product and replace the rudder with something that will not collapse.
My wife and I were looking…
On the water it glides smoothly and it is incredibly stable. It has two large hatches for storage. The tracking is very poor though. The kayak comes with a skeg but we opted for a rudder($200 extra)which is of the worse quality, made of plastic, very wobbly.
On quiet waters it is easy to paddle and is comfortable except for the tracking problem. But if there is wind or a few waves or boats around (which is frequently the case here in Florida) it becomes impossible to control and the rudder becomes ineffective.
In summary if you plan to use this kayak in quiet waters and you have a strong back, you will appreciate its great capacity and stability. But if you are looking for an ocean touring kayak, forget it.
