This is a basic inflatable seat which is normally used in Solstice’s inflatable Rogue kayak. It is easy to inflate, easy to use, folds down very flat for storage, and is versatile enough to be used in various inflatable kayaks. (It is similar to Sea Eagle’s basic SEC inflatable seat.) The main weakness is that it does not offer the best back support, especially if you want to sit up fairly vertical. It also does not have much for seat paddling or elevation, and the seat base where your bottom sits is not very long.
Here are a few ways to improve the back support:
- Use it in the very back of an inflatable kayak when paddling tandem – then you can put the seat back against something and therefore it gives more support.
- If you have a kayak with a cross-bar that spans from the left side tube across to the right tube like the Solstice Trekker or Traveller kayaks do, then you can slide the crossbar through the back of this seat. The end result is solid back support, but with more comfort (due to the air padding) than the original Trekker/Traveller seats.
- When used in tandem, you can have the front person use this seat and place it just right for the back paddler to prop their feet against the back of the seat on the sides, serving double duty (foot rest for back paddler, more back support for front paddler).
If you do have a way to give it more back support as mentioned above, it would deserve a 7 rating instead.
