Learning about oyster reefs…

Learning about oyster reefs in the Laguna Madre of Texas in an inflatable Sea Eagle Kayak was interesting. Those oyster reefs are sharp! But the Sea Eagle kayak was not destroyed on the reef! Paddling back to the bank, I only found one small cut in the bottom. The Sea Eagle survived a razor sharp obstacle.

So it's not a good idea to put an inflatable kayak in oyster territory. But the Sea Eagle kayak was a good thing to find that out. Glad it wasn't a $50,000 power boat!

Thanks Sea Eagle for a cheap but valuable lesson about the Texas Gulf Coast. Sea Eagle hangs tough!

Tried it fishing along a…

Tried it fishing along a river / playing at a Toronto beach Ontario. With the directional stabilizer boat tracks straight & moves slower than a kayak but about the same as a canoe.

Tandem paddling is possible but a little cramped for a second person, waves & boat wake are easily handled.

For the solo angler this will get you further than a pontoon or belly boat, but the 380X will get you even further if you don't mind the extra length. The 340X just did not paddle as fast as the 380X probably due to it's shorter length which you think would compensate by having less drag.

The 340X is a very nice boat if you can resolve yourself to knowing that all you want is a tough little inflatable one person kayak that paddles like a canoe for the cottage, or beach, or for the kids, or something for fishing a small river or pond... or going down some whitewater... wait a minute, this is a nice boat. An excellent general purpose…

An excellent general purpose kayak that you can take to the airport. Though at the airport I had to use a huge suitcase. Try that with a hardshell kayak. I've taken this at the ocean and at the lake with no issues. Only thing is at the ocean you have to unplug the self-bailing valves so when the waves bring water in the kayak won't get flooded. Plus at the lake you definitely need the optional stabilizer otherwise it's difficult to move without going side to side.

The material is real strong and is definitely not an air mattress. I've bumped into rocks and scraped over shells and it still handles it just fine. Definitely recommend it for a general purpose kayak.

Overall, a great buy for the money, but this is not a good IK for Class III or above whitewater. The kayak only has two drain plugs in the back, and going through heavy whitewater, the water coming in seems to stay in rather than draining out. On a lake or lower rated river, the kayak is great. Very sturdy construction; lots of extras, and the new inflatable seats are extremely comfortable.
