Perception Dancer XT - so…

Submitted by: Stan427 on 6/4/2018

Perception Dancer XT - so this is a review of Perception boats in general as this is a 30+ year old boat. I can say after 25+ years of whitewater and now surfing with this boat, the build quality of Perception boats is fantastic. This boat has been up and down the east coast from Acadia Natl Park to the Florida Everglades. It has also been to Malibu Beach and Monterey Bay. Made for whitewater, it surfs great and has also been a base for my wildlife photography hobby. The adjustable foot braces still work like a charm and the hull has held up great to a real beating over rocks, sand and concrete driveways. Is it my imagination or has the color stayed quite well in al the sun it has seen on the back lawn next to the garage. Thanks Perception for making quality products.

I've paddled a Dancer XT for…

I've paddled a Dancer XT for the past 5 years. I'm 5'7", 180 lbs. Its the most versatile kayak I've owned in 25 years of paddling. I've used it on Class I-IV whitewater, big lakes, ocean surfing, downriver racing, slow moving rivers, and small creeks. Its stable enough for photography and even fishing if you're careful. It has the maneuverability of its whitewater roots, but tracks and has the speed of a recreational boat. It rolls like a dream, and has very good secondary stability. Initial stability is good, not great. It has enough room for multiday trips.

It's fairly comfortable; I can paddle for hours without getting out once. I can even wear sandals or non-neoprene booties. The seat and outfitting is decent, but I've had to add minimal padding in the knees and hips. The cockpit size is an "old school" smaller one. But it never inhibited a wet exit. I've never had a "bad day" in this boat. If you're looking for one kayak that can do it all, few are better than a Dancer XT.
