The Romany Excel is an excellent kayak choice for a big guy that wants the ultimate in maneuverability in a kayak that can handle all conditions. Making tight turns in tough places is it’s specialty. And it’s a great looking boat too boot. I bought mine from Kayakwaveology in Connecticut. I highly recommend them especially for after sale alterations to match your body to the boat.

I'm 6' 4" tall and 255lbs. When I found the Romany Excel, it was a dream come true. It was well worth the 400 mile trip from Ohio to try it out. Every other sea kayak I tried caused my legs to fall asleep (and that's if I could fit in the darn thing to begin with). I think it partly had to do with low deck height (and partly because I'm an inflexible middle aged man). The Romany Excel has a deck height of over 14 inches, It allowed for more bend in my legs and that keeps all the tendons and ligaments in my legs from being so tight. It's super stable even without the skeg deployed. It's extremely maneuverable. It's really fun for surfing boat wakes, waves, etc. I highly recommend this boat for bigger guys. The only downside is that they're very hard to find, especially in the great lakes region. Hey Nigel Dennis, we need some NDK retailers here!!!

The past weekend I was able to test the boat out in the Tideraces around Eoods Hole I am pleased to report that the Excell exceeded all of my expectations. The bow rudders I was able to carve with minimum ease and edging during the calm water demo were as easily achieved heading into 8 knot breakers. I'm sure that over time my performance using this exceptional craft will only improve as I go along.
Definitely two thumbs up.
