    Karla LV Description

The Karla is the third collaboration between Danish designer Jesper Kromann-Andersen and Current Designs. This installment brings even more nimbleness and wave riding capability to the paddler. Compared to the Sisu, the Karla is slightly shorter and narrower with additional volume in the bow as added measure against pearling. The Karla is a user friendly kayak to being your exploration of the surf zone and facilitate your adventures. Expert paddlers will equally appreciate this dynamic design.

    I purchased my Current…

I purchased my Current Designs Karla recently from Alder Creek Kayaks in Portland, and I love it! I bought the heavy water layup, but it’s not too heavy for me to load atop my pickup rack alone, and shoulder to the beach. The 15’3” length makes her easy to manage, and she has more storage space than I will ever need for day tripping and exercise paddling. My Sweep rolls were a bit hit and miss before I started paddling my Karla, but now I have a combat roll. And She’s fast enough for me to keep up with my friends, one in a Romany and one in an Illusion. And Karla is fun to paddle! When the wind kicks up and the waves batter her, she comes alive and goes to work! I feel super confident when it’s gnarly out with Karla. Bracing, skulling, riding her on edge—are easy. And when I’m under water in the waves, practicing for the day when I’ll head to the coast to surf in bigger water, sometimes I mistime my roll. But Karla inspires me to make that second effort—and I’m up again in a second and playing in the surf. I’ve tried wet exits and entrances, no problem. She’s stable, with a low back deck, so a cowboy reentrance is a breeze, but its like she wants you to stay aloft unless you wish to do otherwise. I would recommend the Karla to anyone. And this kayak has the chops to take a paddler to the next level!

I am very happy with this boat. At 5'4" and about 150 lbs, I enjoy the smaller size of the LV. The boat dances on the water and is very responsive in waves. The skeg helps with weathercocking and is an easy drop-down lever. I haven't had a chance to surf this boat, but reviews say it is excellent for that. Storage capacity is a bit limited (it is 15' 3"), so touring may be limited to shorter trips and good planning. I have had a bit of leakage into bulkheads and need to work that out (only reason for not giving 5 stars).
