I bought the old Genesis…

I bought the old Genesis this year as an introductory solo whitewater canoe. The Genesis is extremely forgiving, predictable, and stable. Often criticized as too large by serious open boat whitewater paddlers, the boat is great for a beginner.

I use the boat as a tripping canoe for 2-3 day excursions because it has the space and capacity. Though the Genesis hasn't been molded since '96 or so, I highly recommend it for the purposes I have indicated. Happy paddling!

The other comments on this boat are accurate. The Genesis is no play boat. In big water and steep, technical creeks it is a real confidence builder. I wish it were a little drier. However, this is best boat I've ever paddled when swamped. Very stable, good hull speed, and has the length to punch some monster holes. It's never let me down. It's my first choice on flood stage runs or new trips. I give it an 8 because its a little wet.

Fashions, in boats (or in boating), come and go. Right now the trend is towards playboating in small boats. At 13ft, the Genesis does not qualify as fashionable. But, the Gen was designed as a big water boat, and for that, you could hardly ask for a better boat. It is dry. It dances over big waves, It surfs well (front, side, even rear!). With all the rocker it has, the beginner will find it hard to accelerate in it or to make it track. But, in these respects, the intermediate WW canoe paddler will quickly gain an understanding with the boat.

It was not designed for tripping, but it can be used for that, provided the WW isn't really big and you use smaller floatation bags.

As intended, the Gen is a near perfect design. Serious WW canoe paddlers are fortunate to own one. I'm a seriously tough grader. So, the Gen rates a 9.

No longer being molded. It would be at its best when ww tripping. Plenty of reserve capacity for gear. Certainly not a hot play boat, but it will do what you ask of it. Side surfs well, dry. Not very fast though. Can be tandemed with a small kid. I'll keep mine for possible future trips, but I would really like a shorter playboat, most of my trips are on easy stuff anyway, the Genesis is overkill. Also, it would be nice to have around to put occasional guests/ newbys into.
